Layered potato casserole ("rakott krumpli") is a classic Hungarian one-pot dish where the layering gives the harmony of flavours.
1. Cook the potatoes in their skins, let them cool, then peel them and cut them into rounds.
2. Hard-boil the eggs, cool them, peel them and cut them into rounds.
3. Cut the sausage into rounds.
4. Grease the bottom of an ovenproof dish, and start layering: potato on the bottom, then egg and sausage.
5. Drizzle it with sour cream, and salt it.
6. Repeat the layering, with plenty of sour cream on top.
7. In a preheated oven bake it until the top browns nicely golden.
Tip: The thick top layer of sour cream, browning while baking, gives the best bites.
